Welcome > About Us

In 1992, the birth of the State Games of Mississippi elevated the spirit of amateur athletics in Mississippi. The State Games of Mississippi has encouraged participation for all Mississippians by creating new sport opportunities and by serving as educator and cheerleader to sports newcomers. The State Games provides the social atmosphere for heightened interest in sports, uplifted family values and increased community pride. The State Games of Mississippi is a not-for-profit organization and is primarily funded through sponsorships and contributions. The entire community lends a hand during the Games with more than 400 volunteers making the event a success.

In its 17 years, the State Games of Mississippi has become a showcase for Mississippi’s amateur athletes, providing an avenue for camaraderie, positive personal development and achievement through athletic competition. The State Games of Mississippi offers an opportunity for athletes of all ages and skill levels to contend in a variety of sporting events. From the children’s divisions to the seniors divisions, the stalwart character of Mississippians comes to the surface, giving true meaning to the oath of athletes that has been the guiding principle of Olympic competitions since ancient times. Mississippi’s Olympic-style sporting festival is part of the National Congress of State Games movement, and works closely with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). The State Games of Mississippi is a part of the growing national grass roots amateur athletic movement. Dr. Leroy T. Walker, past president of the USOC, once said, “Olympic dreams can be born and nurtured in our State Games program. It is the community spirit that grows across this country that makes our proud heritage of sport.”

During the third and fourth weekends in June, the State Games of Mississippi brings together amateur athletes from across Mississippi. Patterned after Olympic competition, the event comes complete with an Opening Ceremonies, including the lighting of the torch and a parade of athletes. Embodying the Olympic tradition, it provides the benefit of physical activity and the opportunity to share an Olympic experience. The Opening Ceremonies is an exciting way for the whole family to share in the spectacle and pageantry of the Games. Winners during the State Games are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals. With the common bond of grassroots participation, the State Games of Mississippi brings people together from all walks of life in a spirit of friendship and competition. It offers a source of recognition for athletes and is an avenue to further develop athletics, fitness programs and awareness. In 2007, athletes numbered nearly 4,500, with 75 percent under the age of 18. The athletes represented over 300 Mississippi cities, towns and communities. Competing in 27 sports, athletes ranged in age from 4 to 91, with 54% males and 46% females.

It is the goal of the Games to provide affordable entry fees with excellent competition, a family atmosphere and a positive experience for athletes of all ages and abilities. The State Games strives to instill pride in personal achievement, physical fitness, and teamwork. Positive role models impart positive attitudes in all those who are a part of the Games. In the past, the Games have welcomed native Mississippi Olympians Ralph Boston, Willye White, Spencer Haywood, Lusia Harris-Stewart, Hayes Jones and Bill Hardin.

The State Games has become Mississippi’s largest annual amateur multi-sport event. It is well grounded through strong partnerships with amateur sport associations, host communities, and organizations interested in promotion of sports. The State Games brings out the best amateur sports has to offer, including sportsmanship, teamwork and perseverance. Beyond the sports experience, participants learn about setting goals, facing hard work and dedication and understanding the diversity of others. The State Games of Mississippi is an event for all Mississippians. Please help us as we continue our efforts to grow.
